The Giginski Monastery named after st. Cosma and Damyan lies in the Tsurna Gora Mountain, near the town of Trun, only 70km away from Sofia. Little know even among the Bulgarians, the Gigisnki Monastery is one of the most surprising landmarks to be visited in this area. You will be impressed by the beauty and tranquility of the surrounding nature. The monastery dates back from the 11th century and is one of the few monasteries in Bulgaria which kept its functions even after the fall under Turkish slavery. During the middle ages it kept its role of spiritual and literary center and even housed a church school for some time. During WWII it served as a concentration camp while later on was completely abandoned. Its restoration began as late as 2007 and today the visitor will be surprised by the pleasant atmosphere of the monastery complex.
On the way back from the monastery, you may stop to see the rock-hewn chapel where the Bulgarian woman saint Sveta Petka used to live.
In the afternoon, depart to the picturesque gorge of river Erma, which is with no doubt the most visited tourist attraction in the Trun region and one of the most picturesque places in Bulgaria. During the tour, we will stroll along specially built eco-trail, which passes through the most interesting section of the gorge - where the river forms a rocky waterfall and beautiful cascades between majestic cliffs. The views from the path are breath-taking and long remembered.
