Kyustendil and Zemen Monastery

  • Description
  • Departures and Prices
The Zemen Monastery dates back to the XI century and is one of the oldest preserved monastries in Bulgaria. It is currently uninhabited and declared a monument of culture. The church is richly decorated with frescoes - the oldest layer is from the 11th century and the better preserved from the 14th. Some of the murals are unique examples of medieval Christian art and are artistically most valuable in the Balkans after the frescoes of the Boyana church.
In the afternoon, explore the town of Kyustendil - an inheritor of Roman Pautalia. Among the city's most interesting landmarks are Vladimir Dimitrov Art Gallery, the Roman Therms, Dimitar Peshev Museum, Hisarlaka Park.
