This tour is designed for those who would like to see the best highlights of the country in only 6 days. We have included three UNESCO sites - Boyana church in Sofia, Rila monastery and Thracian Tomb in Kazanluk. We hope you will enjoy this classic tour of Bulgaria.
Day 1 - ARRIVAL IN SOFIA. CITY TOUR
Arrival in Sofia and transfer to your hotel. Sightseeing of Sofia - visit Alexander Nevski Cathedral dominating the city, the church of st. Sophia which gave the name of the city, the Monument of Tsar Liberator, the Rotunda of St. George, which is the best preserved Byzantine building, the Russian church st. Nikolas, the medieval church of St. Petka, Banya Bashi Mosque, the ruins of ancient Roman Serdica and some more. You will visit Boyana church located in Vitosha Mountain, included in UNESCO Patrimony.
Day 2 - SOFIA - RILA MONASTERY – PLOVDIV (360 km)
Visit the most famous tourist site of Bulgaria - The Rila Monastery. Nestled amidst centuries old forests of Rila National Park, the monastery is a treasury of national importance. The amazing frescoes, the guilded iconostasis of the church, the arcaded balconies and the stunning mountain views, make the visit to the monastery a memorable one. Visit the monastery church and museum. Continue to Plovdiv for an overnight. /B/
Day 3 - PLOVDIV CITY TOUR - NESSEBAR (290 km)
Morning city tour of Plovdiv - Bulgaria’s second largest city and the first elected a European capital of culture for 2019. This is a city with millennium old history. It has preserved ruins from Roman, Ottoman and Bulgarian Revival period. During our city tour you will see the Roman Forum and Stadium as well as the Roman theatre dating back to the 2nd AD; Walk along the tiny cobbled streets of the old town winding between ancient fortress walls, beautiful houses and churches. Proceed to the Black Sea. Overnight in Nessebar /B/
Day 4 - NESSEBAR - ZHERAVNA - VELIKO TARNOVO (290 km)
Leaving behind the Black Sea Coast, we head to Veliko Tarnovo via the village of Zheravna - an architectural reserve with over 200 houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Arrive in Veliko Turnovo - the medieval capital of Bulgaria and explore the town's numerous attractions. sightseeing tour of Veliko Turnovo with a walk to Tsarevets medieval stronghold which during the Middle Ages housed the palaces of the Bulgarian Emperors and the Patriarchate. Walk along Samovodskata charshia - a lively market street where you can taste Turkish coffee and sweet delight "lokum" or you can watch the local artisans who produce their wares in front of you. Day 5 - VELIKO TARNOVO – KAZANLAK - SOFIA (300 km)
After breakfast, drive to the nearby village of Arbanassi. Founded by Albanians, Greeks and Bulgarians, this small village is worth a visit for its fortress-like houses and low-level churches. Cross the Balkan mountains via the historical Shipka pass which played a key role in the Russo- Turkish Liberation war for Bulgaria and arrive in Kazanlak. The area is well known as The Valley of the Thracian Kings due to the numerous Thracian mounds and tombs scattered around. Visit one of the finest examples - a replica of the oldest discovered Thracian tomb - part of UNESCO Patrimony. Afternoon, drive to Sofia
Day 6 - DEPARTURE FROM SOFIA
Free time on your own. Transfer from your hotel to Sofia airport. End of service.
